Explore Land Veins
Find a spot the land holds like a good chair — hills behind, hills either side, open ground in front (feng shui calls it a “dragon lair”). Worth a look before you buy or build a home, open a shop, pick a B&B or campsite, a quiet retreat, or a resting place for family. Energy places told of around the world are marked too.

Veins and lairs — the difference
- Dragon vein
- A line: the ridges running down from the great peaks. The big picture of an area — where the qi comes from, which places have a mountain behind them. Look before choosing a city, a district, a home or a shop.
- Dragon lair
- A point: where a vein comes to rest, held by hills all round. The one spot to put a home, a shop or a grave.
Read the veins first, then find the lair (feng shui’s “follow the dragon, point to the lair”); the vein is the vine, the lair the fruit on it. On the map: fine gold lines are veins, numbered pearls are lairs, and the gold stroke into a pearl is the vein behind it.
How the score is worked out
From public elevation data we look out from each spot in 16 directions: is there a hill behind to lean on, hills guarding both sides, any gap for the wind, open gentle ground in front, a low hill screening the view ahead, a stream in front? The closer each is to the traditional proportions, the higher the score; a spot with water running through it doesn't count. Fine gold lines are ridgelines; the gold band is the ridge behind a good spot, running down from the peak.
Worked out from public elevation data, not seen by a feng shui master. It doesn't mean the land may be used — check who owns it and whether you may build on it or use it (planning and burial rules) yourself.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dragon lair (龍穴)?
In feng shui a dragon lair is a spot with a hill behind it (the Black Tortoise), hills guarding left and right (Azure Dragon, White Tiger), gentle open ground in front (the Bright Hall), a low hill farther out as a screen (the Table Mountain) and water in front — sheltered from the wind, like a chair that is comfortable to sit in. A dragon vein (龍脈) is the run of the ridges leading there; the lair is usually at its end.
How does Explore Land Veins find one?
From public elevation data it looks out from every spot in 16 directions: is there a backing hill, are there guarding hills left and right, are there wind gaps, is the front open and gentle, is there a table mountain, is there a stream in front. The closer each one is to the proportions the tradition describes, the higher the score; a spot with water running through its middle is dropped. Homes and offices (陽宅), graves (陰宅) and shops are scored separately.
Where can I look, and how do I enter a place?
Anywhere in the world with elevation data. Type a place name or a street address (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Korea, mainland China), paste a Google Maps link, or paste a listing from a property site such as 591, Sinyi, Centaline, Midland or SUUMO. On site, press “I am here” to use GPS and the compass to line up the direction.
What else does it show besides the score?
Open a spot to see its sitting and facing and the door direction, Flying Stars (Period 9), whether the ground may be broken this year (Sui Po, San Sha, Wu Huang), winter-solstice sunlight, whether it suits you and your family (Eight Mansions, zodiac clashes, this year’s directions), better spots nearby and 3D terrain — and make a share card. Each region also has a ranking of its best spots.
Is it paid?
Explore Land Veins is a VVIP member feature; this introduction, the sample reading and the plans can be read without signing in. Plans are a 7-day pass, monthly and yearly, priced in HK$ — see the VVIP page.
Is it accurate? Can I buy land or choose a grave from it?
It is computed from public elevation data and has not been reviewed by a feng shui master, and it says nothing about whether the land may be used. Ownership and building or burial rules must be checked separately. Treat it as a first screening, then have a professional look on site.
Where does the data come from, and which north is used?
Terrain comes from MapTiler elevation tiles, roads from OpenStreetMap, and address search from each region’s public services. Sitting and facing always use magnetic north (WMM2025 model; about 5° west in Taiwan), matching a compass held on site; the dashed lines on the map stay true north.
