The place
The foremost shrine of Japan, dedicated to Amaterasu; its main hall is rebuilt on the neighbouring plot every twenty years in the ancient way (Shikinen Sengū). Forested hills ring it and the Isuzu River runs past. The hall faces south; the best seat the ground reads faces north-north-west, with the hills to the south at its back.
